Alex Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs maintained their outstanding start to the regular season on Monday night Football as they beat the Washington Redskins 29-20 at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Chiefs continued to rely on their number one ranked running offence as Kareem Hunt ran for 101 yards from 21 carries of the ball. Alex Smith made 7 carries himself too, gaining 56 yards and putting 6 points on the board on one occasion.
The pass offence was also in full swing as Smith threw for 293 yards and a single touchdown from 27 complete passes boasting a completion percentage of 72.9%.
This win sees the Chiefs continue to roll through their opponents after having already dispatched of the Patriots, Eagles and Chargers. The Chiefs are looking very strong on offence and have relied heavily on Alex Smith and Kareem Hunt. If they are to get to their fourth ever Superbowl or maybe even win their second ever championship, you would think the defence would have to improve.
The Chiefs defence hasn’t been anywhere near the level their offensive colleagues have been as they are the 27th ranked defence in the league allowing over 1400 yards already this season. Although they have somehow only conceded 77 points, which is just three more than the Denver Broncos’ number one ranked defence. Maybe that’s down to the level of opposition they have faced (with the exception of New England, of course).
It will be very interesting to see how they fare defensively when they come up against Houston this week who are coming off the back of a game in which they put up 57 points against Tennessee.
Fortunately for the defence, Alex Smith has had a decent season so far with 8 Touchdowns to his name as well as over 1,000 passing yards already. He has a QB Rating of 124.5 and is ranked as the 9th best QB in the league statistically this season.
However, the focus has been on the running game this season as the Chiefs have the number one ranked running attack in the league so far this season. Kareem Hunt has been in outstanding form running for over 500 yards and 4 touchdowns after just four games.
It’s this form which sees him ranked as the number one in the NFL as well his team boasting a 4-0 record so far.
